Howwell can young peoplewith Asperger’s disorder recognize threat and learn about affect in faces?: A pilot study

چکیده
The abilities to identify threat and learn about affect in facial photographs were compared between a non-autistic university student group (NUS), amatched Asperger’s group (MAS) on the Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM), and an unmatched Asperger’s group (UAS) who scored lower on the SPM. Participants were given pairs of faces and asked which person looked more dangerous. In addition, they engaged in explicit learning of the facial affect features. This study indicated (a) that the ability to identify threat in faces was intact in the MAS group, but poor in the UAS group; (b) a graded degree of performance in facial affect recognition (NUS>MAS>UAS); (c) that all groups improved their facial affect recognition after the brief explicit teaching intervention. This pilot study obtained first indications for the feasible assessment of the ability to distinguish threat in faces and potential remediation effects of the brief explicit teaching of facial emotions for young people with Asperger’s disorder. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Human Face Recognition, Information Processing and Social Behavior in Children with Autism
The aim of this study was to investigate whether children with high-functioning autism (HFA) and Asperger’s syndrome (AS) can be differentiated from each other and from typically developing children in ability to recognize a human face. The present study included 69 participants: children with autism (high-functioning autism or Asperger’s syndrome, n = 15 per group) and a control group of 39 ty...
متن کاملCommon and unique impairments in facial-expression recognition in pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified and Asperger's disorder
This study was designed to identify specific difficulties and associated features related to the problems with social interaction experienced by individuals with pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) using an emotion-recognition task. We compared individuals with PDD-NOS or Asperger’s disorder (ASP) and typically developing individuals in terms of their ability to r...
متن کاملSheep recognize familiar and unfamiliar human faces from two-dimensional images
One of the most important human social skills is the ability to recognize faces. Humans recognize familiar faces easily, and can learn to identify unfamiliar faces from repeatedly presented images. Sheep are social animals that can recognize other sheep as well as familiar humans. Little is known, however, about their holistic face-processing abilities. In this study, we trained eight sheep (Ov...
متن کاملMental Rotation of Faces in Healthy Aging and Alzheimer's Disease
BACKGROUND Previous research has shown that individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) develop visuospatial difficulties that affect their ability to mentally rotate objects. Surprisingly, the existing literature has generally ignored the impact of this mental rotation deficit on the ability of AD patients to recognize faces from different angles. Instead, the devastating loss of the ability to ...
متن کاملYoung Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder Show Early Atypical Neural Activity during Emotional Face Processing
Social cognition is impaired in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The ability to perceive and interpret affect is integral to successful social functioning and has an extended developmental course. However, the neural mechanisms underlying emotional face processing in ASD are unclear. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), the present study explored neural activation during implicit emotional face p...
